The Autopilot DIST/FPA mode

The DIST button engages DIST/FPA autopilot mode, in which the autopilot keeps Flight Path Angle (FPA) by dynamically adjusting vertical speed target. The distance (DIST) over which altitude target will be achieved is displayed in green letters in place of vertical speed target. Vertical speed knob can be used to adjust current FPA, in steps corresponding to 100 fpm increase/decrease.

This is very useful for arriving at navigational fixes at right altitude, by smoothly ascending/descending in constant angle relative to ground surface.

Assume you are at FL200 and want to arrive at 27 NM distant fix at FL100. Set autopilot altitude target to 10000, switch DIST button on and tune vertical speed knob until distance display reads 27 NM. The autopilot will descend the airplane at constant 3.5 deg FPA, reaching 10000 over next 27 NM. The FPA is kept constant, regardles of current ground and air speed.
